Do Replacement Conservatory Roofs Really Work?

In the UK there are an estimated three million conservatories and the vast majority of these are ripe for a makeover.

Many are too cold in winter, most are too hot when the sun shines in the summer.

These flaws have made replacement conservatory roofs increasingly common; the aim of these roofs is to make the room usable all year round, keeping them at a pleasant temperature.

However, there is one key question – do they work.

OK, at this point clearly we need to offer full disclosure. At Guardian Warm Roof, we make a replacement conservatory roof; it's a product we are extremely proud of.

It is also the only solid, tiled replacement roof on the market with full Local Area Building Control (LABC) approval. That means that asking the question of whether replacement roofs work isn't a straight yes or no; it depends on which roofs.

The Guardian Roof has regulatory approval, this means both that it has satisfied impartial experts that it delivers on its promises and that you can buy with peace of mind. Peace of mind that you have a product the council approves of, but also peace of mind that you are buying a product proven to work.

In this blog, we can't really speak for other products, though we would of course expect you to check out a range of options.

What we can do is answer some common queries about the market-leader in this area.

Will a replacement roof make my conservatory usable all year round

Yes! This is why the Guardian Roof was made. It used to be that conservatory roofs had to be either glass or polycarbonate; neither material being fit for purpose. It was our work in developing a solid, lightweight, tiled alternative that changed this; we had to prove that our product was effective in order for regulations to be changed.

In 2010, this did lead to a change, our roofs gaining approval and regulations changing. We believe this is the greatest testimonial; our roofs are so good they led to a change in the rules.

A Guardian Roof makes your conservatory usable in the summer, no longer will it be a virtual sauna, only good as extra storage.

In winter, it keeps heat in far better than a glass roof, this means it can be used without the need to keep the heating on 24/7.

What do they look like?

Luckily, you can take a look for yourself – we have a gallery page on the site and you can also look at our roof finishes.

Most conservatories look, dare we say, a tad dated and the glass or polycarb roof doesn't exactly blend in with the rest of the house.

The Guardian Roof comes in a range of subtle colours and styles, whether it's Lean-to, Gable, Victorian or something else – bespoke roofs can also be created for those rare occasions when one of the standard options isn't a match.

As you can see in the gallery, a Guardian Roof helps transform the conservatory into a sympathetic extension.

How much upheaval

Not much! Typically it takes just three days to remove and recycle the old roof and install the new. You needn't even have a single weekend effected.

We can't think of many other home improvements which have so profound an effect in so short a space of time.
